Masks

Each and everyday
I walk with a mask on my face
Afraid
Afraid that somebody would  recognize
That under this big wide smile
Lies a lonely sad man

In this society of stigma
Where a man must show no weakness
No weakness, no tears
A man must be tough!
A man is a symbol of strength!

This, this society of expectation
This is what broke me
No– this is not just about me
This is all about the victims of stigma
The outcasts, the ostracized

Oh, how much do I want to break free
Destroy the chains that confine me
Shatter the shackles restraining my freedom
But doing that requires courage
That, I still lack
So for now, I will keep this up
Tomorrow, what mask should I wear?
